This task requires the learner driver to demonstrate the ability to locate and describe the functions of all vehicle controls and instruments, including gauges and warning signs.

TASK KEY POINTS

  • Starts the vehicle's engine and correctly tests the left and right-hand indicators, headlights (on low and high beam), taillights, brake lights and reverse lights, by having someone stand at the front and then rear of the vehicle to confirm the checks.
  • Identifies and tests the hazard lights (using same technique as above).
  • Identifies and tests the windscreen washers and wipers.
  • Identifies and tests the demister/s.
  • Identifies and tests the air conditioning system.
  • Identifies and tests the vehicle's horn.
  • Able to locate and explain the function of the fuel gauge (and light if fitted), speedometer, tachometer (if fitted) coolant temperature gauge and the vehicle's odometer.
  • Able to locate and explain each of the vehicle's dash-mounted warning lights.
  • Demonstrates how to check tyre condition, pressure and tread depth.
